Donor Spotlight: Mike Christie and Terry Cobb

Terry Cobb and Mike Christie

Terry Cobb is a graduate in physics from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), and Mike Christie ’75 is a Pitzer alum who graduated as a classics major. Despite knowing each other in high school, they bonded later in life, or, as any viewer of Star Trek might say (both are avid fans), in the next generation when they were reunited through their adventures.

Mike Christie and Terry Cobb

Mike and Terry have shared a fanhood for all things Star Trek since his days at Pitzer College.

Mike speaks very fondly of his time at Pitzer College, remembering the great professors he had who ignited his passion to pursue a classics degree. His favorite class was Greek Tragedy, and he vividly recalled discussing The Bacchae in that class and the intense experience he felt throughout his time at the college. He also thoroughly enjoyed the expository composition class he took with Ellen Ringler as a senior. He even dedicated a paver in the dorms to express his appreciation for his professors and his time here at Pitzer!

“It was a good, solid liberal arts degree that gave me a broader perspective of the world,” he says of his education. He went on to work for a number of years in the book industry and spent several years as a technical writer.

Dedication Brick

Mike first expressed his appreciation for Pitzer faculty on this paver brick in the dorms decades ago.

Terry initially started off as an earth science major at CSUF but later changed to physics because she was so passionate about space. She had a varied career, working with technical sales at Texas Instruments, and also was in the aerospace and medical industries.

After Mike’s dad passed away, and with his experience in having to manage his estate and go through probate court, he and Terry decided to be proactive and set their own affairs in order. They split their assets four ways, with each of them having two “picks,” and Mike selected Pitzer as one of the beneficiaries of his portion. Mike and Terry are both passionate about education, and we appreciate them thinking of our college and supporting the adventures of future Pitzer students.

We thank them for their support of Pitzer College, and, in the wise words of Mr. Spock, may they live long and prosper! 🖖
